Mountain View at a glance

Ask most old-time Pretoria residents about Mountain View and everyone should reply with "oh, yes, that age-old suburb perched on the side of the mountain!".  It is probably the most uniquely located suburb of Pretoria where the houses open their back doors onto the southern ridge of the Magaliesberg Mountain.  Even more special is when it is covered in a purple blanket of Jakaranda flowers during the month of October.  A truly iconic Pretoria site!

Even within this seemingly perfect location, there is still the need for the "perfect location" to look out for.  Houses on Daphne Street, for example, enjoy a prime spot, where the small greenbelt in front of them affords breathtaking early morning, late afternoon and evening views out across the glistening lights of the Pretoria city, while little nuggets of treasure such as the pretty little Gereformeerde Church on the corner with Merwede Street make for a great amount of sentiment that is hard to find in the newer, more modern suburbs of Pretoria.

Mountain view certainly holds a few truly old-styled classic middle-class homes and if one finds a home that is well maintained or renovated accordingly it is well worth the purchase.  But generally, houses are old and in need of renovation which for some potential buyers pose an exciting challenge from a renovation point of view.  There is also a choice of apartments, flats, cluster homes and in-between some vacant land.  Property however is well priced opening up a market for a range of residents especially those seeking affordable homing options, as well as for the first-time home owners or persons looking for good location and proximity to work, schools, medical facilities, the centre of Pretoria and daily amenities.

CLIMATE:

With the Magaliesberg mountain at its back door, Mountain View is particularly well-sheltered against the elements, over and above the fact that it also enjoys a touch of the sub-tropical climate that is particularly prevalent just on the other side of the ridge.  During the summer months the homes, gardens and streets are well shaded, under the large old trees, from the hot summer sun.

Days warm up from early in the morning and can easily reach 30 degrees Celsius and up.  Rain takes place during summer and fortunately Pretoria is often blessed with mid to late afternoon showers, breaking the heat and leading to warm but comfortable evenings.

Winters can be quite cold during the early morning hours but generally warm up to be pleasantly comfortable for most of the day.  On the odd occasion, when temperatures become unusually low, there may be frost.

DISTANCE FROM MOUNTAIN VIEW TO THE PRETORIA CBD:

  • Via Paul Kruger: 17 minutes / 9 kms
  • Via Van Der Hoff Rd/R514 and Es'kia Mphahlele Dr/M1: 14 minutes / 10 kms
  • Via Es'kia Mphahlele Dr/M1: 12 minutes / 9 kms
  • Distances are approximate and drive times indicated during normal traffic.

MAJOR ACCESS ROUTES:

With a number of smaller access roads leading to and from Mountain View, there is one major throughfare which runs through the suburb and that is Denyssen Avenue.  If one travel west this will tie up with Bremer Road (R55) which leads to Pretoria West, and if travel takes place in an easterly direction, then it leads to the M1 which will end in the CBD of Pretoria.
